Muffler Delete Pipes: What They Do, How Loud They Are and Whether One Suits Your Ute

A muffler delete pipe swaps your rear muffler for straight pipe to get a louder, deeper note. Here's what it does, how loud it is and whether it suits your ute.
Muffler Delete Pipes: What They Do, How Loud They Are and Whether One Suits Your Ute

A muffler delete pipe is a straight section of pipe that bolts in where your factory rear muffler used to sit. It gives your ute or car a louder, deeper exhaust note for a fraction of the cost of a full system. The trade-off is noise: it will be noticeably louder, and you still have to stay within legal noise limits.

What does a muffler delete pipe do?

Your rear muffler is there to quieten the exhaust. A muffler delete pipe (also called a muffler eliminator) takes its place with plain pipe, so more of the engine's sound comes through. Nothing else in the exhaust changes. Your cat, and your DPF if your vehicle has one, stay exactly where they are.

Our bolt-on pipes are vehicle-specific and use the factory mounting points. The Ranger PX / BT-50 rear bolt-on muffler delete pipe, for example, comes in 2.5" or 3" aluminised tube with 10mm laser-cut flanges and hangers and a full fitting kit. It's a direct replacement for the factory muffler, with no cutting or welding.

How loud is it?

Louder than a muffler, but not the loudest option. The sound guide on our Ranger pipe page ranks the rear section options like this:

  • Muffler: quiet
  • Hotdog: moderate
  • Straight pipe: loud
  • Diff dump pipe: loudest

A muffler delete sits in the "loud" or "loudest" end depending on where it exits. If you want more sound but still want long highway trips to be comfortable, a hotdog is the middle ground. Our post What is a Hotdog Muffler? explains how they work.

Which vehicles do we have them for?

Our 4x4 bolt-in mufflers, hotdogs and muffler delete pipes range covers popular utes and 4WDs, including:

For cars, our performance muffler delete pipes cover VE Commodore sedans, utes and wagons, plus Redback systems for Falcon and earlier Commodores. Always check the fitment on the product page, or call us before you order.

Is a muffler delete legal?

Whatever you fit, your vehicle must still meet noise limits on the road. In Victoria, EPA Victoria can fine owners of noisy vehicles and require them to get a Certificate of Compliance from an approved tester. Other states have their own rules, so check before you fit one, especially if the vehicle already has other exhaust changes.

Who should fit one?

A muffler delete suits you if you want a sportier sound on a budget and you're happy with a louder cabin. If you tow or tour long distances, a hotdog or a full system with a muffler is usually the better pick.

Fitting is a bolt-on job. You unbolt the factory muffler and bolt the pipe in its place with the supplied kit, then check everything is aligned and tighten from front to back.
