What's a Turbo-Back Exhaust?

A turbo-back exhaust is an aftermarket or performance exhaust system that replaces everything from the turbocharger outlet all the way to the tailpipe.
It typically includes:
-
Dump pipe (or turbo outlet pipe) – connects directly to the turbo.
-
Catalytic converter (or high-flow cat) – or a test pipe if off-road use only.
-
Mid-pipe and/or hotdog (resonator) – helps with sound tuning.
-
Rear muffler and tailpipe – final part of the exhaust that exits the vehicle.
Key Features:
-
Designed to improve performance by reducing exhaust back pressure and increasing airflow.
-
Often made from mandrel-bent piping for smoother exhaust flow.
-
Commonly available in stainless steel or aluminised steel.
-
Can increase the vehicle's sound volume and tone, depending on the setup.
Benefits:
-
More power and torque – especially on turbo diesel or petrol vehicles.
-
Better throttle response.
-
Stronger turbo spooling (faster boost).
-
Improved fuel efficiency (in some cases).
-
Enhanced sound – deeper, louder, or more aggressive exhaust note.
Things to Note:
-
Legal compliance: Some turbo-back systems are not road-legal unless they retain an approved catalytic converter and meet emissions standards.
-
Tuning required: On many vehicles, especially diesels, installing a turbo-back may require an ECU tune for optimal performance and to avoid warning lights. Please carefully read the details on each of our exhaust product pages.
Summary:
A turbo-back exhaust is a full performance upgrade that replaces the entire exhaust system downstream from the turbo. It’s ideal for drivers chasing more power, better turbo response, and a tougher exhaust note.
